How to answer a customer ESG questionnaire (without starting from scratch)

More SMEs are being sent ESG questionnaires by big customers and banks. The trick is not to answer each one from scratch: gather your core data once, map it to a recognised standard like VSME, and reuse it. Here is how.

Understand what is being asked

Most questionnaires cover the same core ground: energy use, greenhouse gas emissions, basic workforce and governance information, and policies. Skim the whole form first and group the questions by theme before answering anything.

Gather the core data once

Pull together your Scope 1 and 2 emissions, energy consumption, headcount and key policies. This single dataset answers the majority of questions across every questionnaire you will receive.

Use a recognised standard

Answering against the EU’s voluntary VSME standard means you produce one consistent set of disclosures instead of bespoke answers each time. Large customers reporting under the CSRD are expected to accept VSME-level data from SME suppliers.

Build a reusable answer bank

Save each answer with its supporting evidence so the next questionnaire is mostly copy, review and update. Keep figures dated so you know when to refresh them.

Frequently asked questions

Why are customers asking SMEs for ESG data?

Large companies must report on their value chain under rules like the CSRD, so they ask suppliers — including SMEs — for emissions and ESG data. VSME is designed to answer these requests proportionately.

What if I can’t answer every question?

That is normal. Answer what you can, be transparent about gaps, and show a plan to close them. A partial, honest response against a recognised standard is far better than nothing.
